Silica H Type TLC plates are made with a slightly larger particle silica than the original “Classic” TLC plate. This larger size particle of the Silica H is popular as can be seen in the many references found to published journal applications. Gypsum (calcium sulfate) is used as the binder which produces a softer layer for easy scraping and recovery of component spots or bands for further analysis. Because the binder is inorganic, it is compatible with aggressive visualization techniques such as sulfuric acid and high heat charring. The lower water tolerance is due to the slight solubility of calcium sulfate in water. Dipping procedures with aqueous mixtures are not recommended but spray techniques are acceptable.
