Aluminum oxide (alumina) is the second most common normal phase adsorbent for Thin Layer Chromatography (after silica gel). Alumina is a polar stationary phase, so polar analytes stick strongly. Since gypsum is used as the binder, care must be taken in not exceeding 20% water in the mobile phase. The pH is neutral to slightly basic.
